Ok so as most of us know, vinyl records are coming back with a vengeance and theyre super trendy. I jumped on that gig, but not because of the trend. My friend (and co-writer haha) Austin was big into records and always buying them at shows and stuff and I never really felt like it was necessary. One day I was at a record store when I saw a record of one of my favorite bands. It was cheap and I thought it would be fun to own a record of one of my favorite bands. Well, I ended up buying it and one thing led to another and I caught the bug.
As any vinyl fanatic would tell you, its very addicting. Once I bought a record and had one I needed a turntable immediately and I also needed more records. I proceeded to buy and buy and buy and I got a pretty good collection pretty quickly. It was really awesome, but its weird how I never felt like owning a record or a record player until I had a physical copy of some 7" in my hand. I went vinyl crazy after that.
Really, its weird how something as simple as vinyl can make me so happy but outside of my friends/girlfriend, family, and pets, nothing makes me as happy as buying an awesome record, listening to any of my records, or a trip to the record store. Some people have drug problems, I have record problems. OVERALL though, I think thats healthy. You could say that vinyl is my anti-drug.
Its funny that once you get into it, its super fun to own original presses, vinyl with cool colors, picture discs, etc.
Now some people might not know where to go for vinyl. In SLC there are a few good places. If youre looking for punk then go with
Raunch Records in sugar house.
Other independent music, then Slow Train is a good place to go to.
Randys records on 900 S and about 200 E is good for just about everything.
Then theres your gray whales. A lot of them suck for vinyl but the one by the U is pretty damn good.
If youre looking for good punk vinyl on the internet, then I would try.....
www.vinylcollective.com
www.vinyljunkiedistro.com
the distro on www.noidearecords.com has an awesome selection.
theres always the trusty www.interpunk.com They ship ridiculously fast.
and ebay is always good.
So go check out your local record stores or look up some favorite bands online and get some records! Its fun, affordable, and well worth it. Thanks for reading!!
