Ok lets get skramzy....with a post about Ampere!!
Alright so Ampere is one of the few emo/screamo bands that is still surviving today. Their definitely what I would call "Chaotic hardcore" if youre afraid of the screamo term. Their probably my favorite real screamo band. They have Will from Orchid which gives them tons of coolness points. Ill be honest and say that I havent heard all of their music, but I have heard their only (I think?) full length which is "All Our Tomorrow Ends Today" and also their split with Sinaloa.
Their lyrics are deep and passionate but not too pretentious which is good. (I hate pretentious lyrics) Also, their music is suprisingly easy on the ears. I mean one listen through half of a combatwoundedveteran album and your head is ready to explode. Ampere on the other hand is more musical then a lot of their screamo counterparts (at least in my opinion) Its funny because their songs usually average about 30 seconds to a minute long, but that doesnt take away from anything. I will admit, that I do wish "All Our Tomorrow Ends Today" was a little longer (I think it comes in at about 15 minutes) but its still really great. I would recommend it to any hardcore fan.
I was able to see them live at the fest and man, it was the MOST intense show I have ever been apart of. I love intense shows but this one was even too intense for me. I was in the mosh for the first few songs and then I left and just watched. It was CRAZY but in such a cool way. Ampere themselves were awesome on stage. The lead vocalist had such an awesome stage presence. It was so cool. Austin (the co-writer of this blog) was able to jump on stage and sing along to a gorilla biscuits cover with them. That was ridiculously awesome. If Ampere ever comes anywhere near you, I suggest you go see them cause it will be SO cool.
Well thats my opinion on Ampere. Everyone should buy their albums asap. They are SO good and the liner notes are cool.
Heres a download for their full length. "All Our Tomorrow Ends Today" But if you like it, then PLEASE buy their album. These bands are struggling. Thank you!

bronson and das oath
today will be discussing punk and hardcore vocalist mark McCoy and talking about of a few of his bands such as Charles Bronson, holy molar, das oath as well as his new project failures with will from ampere an orchid
few words to describe him energetic, jerk, funny, and spastic
Charles Bronson was a prolific power violence band from dekalb Illinois who were together from 1994 to 1997. the bands style is power violence in the same vein as bands such as infest who blended youth crew hardcore with thrash the band also took samples from various media including movies by the actor Charles Bronson. lyrical the band took satirical jabs at the hardcore community the band had a long standing feud with Cleveland hardcore band one life crew as noticed on tracks such as one life crew goes on slim fast and also had a strong dislike for tony victory ala the track tony victory knows how to party. the band released many hard to come by 7 inchs splits and comp tracks. the bands complete discography or in this case discocrappy was released in 1999 on 625 thrashcore the band was also known for their witty song titles such as
"I Can't Be In A Band With You Because You Like Epitaph
"They Should Legalize Drugs So You Can Hurry Up And Fucking Die"(two of the members were sxe)
complete discocrappy http://www.mediafire.com/?55ziejhgzwo
last show ever
in 1999 mark formed the thrash core band das oath in new york originating from the Netherlands. after only two rehearsals the band recorded their 8 song debut seven inch an soon followed by touring all over europe in fall 0f 2000. the band returned to the studio record their 9" / 10" record. the band did a us tour after that. in 2004 the band released the released their self titled debut on uber mega indie hipster label dim mak many people felt the band lost the punk ascetic. they also released another album through youth attack
one of my favorite releases the band did is their covers split with ampere
das oath covered jesus and mary chain, nirvana, the offspring and negative fx

Vinyl records? Youre so retro!
Ok so as most of us know, vinyl records are coming back with a vengeance and theyre super trendy. I jumped on that gig, but not because of the trend. My friend (and co-writer haha) Austin was big into records and always buying them at shows and stuff and I never really felt like it was necessary. One day I was at a record store when I saw a record of one of my favorite bands. It was cheap and I thought it would be fun to own a record of one of my favorite bands. Well, I ended up buying it and one thing led to another and I caught the bug.
As any vinyl fanatic would tell you, its very addicting. Once I bought a record and had one I needed a turntable immediately and I also needed more records. I proceeded to buy and buy and buy and I got a pretty good collection pretty quickly. It was really awesome, but its weird how I never felt like owning a record or a record player until I had a physical copy of some 7" in my hand. I went vinyl crazy after that.
Really, its weird how something as simple as vinyl can make me so happy but outside of my friends/girlfriend, family, and pets, nothing makes me as happy as buying an awesome record, listening to any of my records, or a trip to the record store. Some people have drug problems, I have record problems. OVERALL though, I think thats healthy. You could say that vinyl is my anti-drug.
Its funny that once you get into it, its super fun to own original presses, vinyl with cool colors, picture discs, etc.
Now some people might not know where to go for vinyl. In SLC there are a few good places. If youre looking for punk then go with
Raunch Records in sugar house.
Other independent music, then Slow Train is a good place to go to.
Randys records on 900 S and about 200 E is good for just about everything.
Then theres your gray whales. A lot of them suck for vinyl but the one by the U is pretty damn good.
If youre looking for good punk vinyl on the internet, then I would try.....
www.vinylcollective.com
www.vinyljunkiedistro.com
the distro on www.noidearecords.com has an awesome selection.
theres always the trusty www.interpunk.com They ship ridiculously fast.
and ebay is always good.
So go check out your local record stores or look up some favorite bands online and get some records! Its fun, affordable, and well worth it. Thanks for reading!!

I had an energy drink awhile ago and now I'm definitely crashing and feeling like crap so therefore I am in the mood for folk music!!! I'll just do a little shpeal (sp???) on it because I know pretty much nothing about it.
Right now I am listening to an album from a local band called The Sweater Friends. (http://www.myspace.com/thesweaterfriends) They are super good and its reminding me how awesome folk music can be. I have to say that The Mountain Goats albums are ridiculously powerful and so enjoyable and fun to listen to. I recommend "The Sunset Tree" for a more produced mountain goats album and "All Hail West Texas" for a more lo-fi mountain goats album. His lyrics are really so amazing. I cant get enough of The Mountain Goats lately. Its comfort music, for me mentally, and thats what is so freaking awesome about it. I didnt listen to "The Sunset Tree" for almost a year (I had related it to bad things, and it just reminded me of them) but when I finally did again, the song "This Year" almost made me cry but in such an awesome way. I cant say enough how much I love that album. I have it on LP and cd. One for my car and one for my house. Anyway......
Paul Baribeau makes some of the greatest folk music in the history of music. His lyrics are so awesome and so relatable and so freaking powerful. If you ever have the chance to see a Paul Baribeau show, then DO IT!! You can feel the music as he plays it. It almost brings you to tears. I have seen him three times and each time it was amazing. He releases his albums on plan-it-x where every cd is $5 postage paid. Here is the link to their website for more awesome punk rock and folk music. http://www.plan-it-x.com/ I suggest making a mail order. Its super fun and super cheap. When you do, get both of Paul Baribeaus albums because they are both SO great. The song "Christmas Lights" is pretty much my life in a nutshell. Also, his beard rules. (Dont forget, hes got that X!!! :D)
So I guess folk music is a fun way to take a break from punk and get into some deeper music. Not that punk cant be deep but it just usually isnt as deep as a Baribeau or Mountain Goats album. I think I'm gonna make it my quest to get more folk vinyl, but I want it to be good stuff. If you have any suggestions please comment! OH and dont suggest any crap like sufjan stevens or something or something as obvious as Neutral Milk Hotel. (I will say though, that Neutral Milk Hotel rules and I need to listen to that more. HEY! Idea, why dont I get a NMH vinyl? Maybe! Haha)

THIS IS GOING TO BE A SOBER ENVIRONMENT PLEASE NO DRINKING AND DRUGS. if you want that kinda stuff go to the thousands of other partys going on. one of the reason i wanted to do this besides showcasing amazing local

Summer Swallowed us whole

this year well know indie/emo acts got back together and i was lucky to catch them an i can truly say it was life changing show and also one of the best of the year.
the band im talking about is the get up kids from Kansas city Missouri the band was major players in the 90's emo scene touring with everyone from green day to weezer and many more.
The band released four full length albums the one will be focusing on their album Something to Write Home About. the band released two singles from the album the first being ten minutes which was released as part of the sub pop singles club the second action & action was released in Europe by epitaph. the band toured for the album for the next three years until they went into the studio to record their next album on a
wire during the wait for the next album the band released Eudora which was a b sides collection.
the next album on a wire wasn't critically acclaimed vagrant released an animated music video for the single overdue which was received poorly vagrant decided not to promote the album heavily. the band did a tour with super chunk in 02 to support the album. the album got mild praise for mainstream publications such as rolling stone and such many smaller publications felt like band abandoned its emo roots. The band went back into the studio to record their next album Guilt Show which was their last the band also went on their last tour with dashboard confessional
tenses began to rise during the tour with dashboard by the end of the tour the band decided to put the band to rest quietly. the band went on unofficial hiatus the band briefly reunited that next January for a ten year anniversary show the band recorded the show and released it the following may as live at the granada theater. the band officially announced in 05 that they were breaking up the band did a final farewell tour with their last show taking place at a sold out hometown show
in 2008 reports began off a reunion for the tenth anniversary of something to write home as well as a cd reissue. the official reunion show was announced by the Kansas city star the show took place on November 18th 2008 the band announced the cd reissue as well as a 2009 national tour the reissue also contained a dvd of the bands live performance of the whole album as well as archival footage
when they announced the reunion tour i wasent expecting a slc date but low and behold they came after months and months before coming i went on a steady diet of something to write home about their show was amazing i got a set list an they all autographed my cd it was well worth the 30 dollar ticket. During the show the band played some new stuff and it is being reported that in 2010 the band will be releasing a new ep and full length hopefully that means another tour and hopefully another slc show
the cutest song ever
can you sleep as the sound hits your ears?
one at a time
an unspoken balance here
unabridged for so many years
that I should stare at
receivers
to receive her
isn't fair
don't worry I'll catch you
don't worry I'll catch you
don't ever worry
your arms in mine
any time
wouldn't trade anything
you're still my everything
to my suprise
before my eyes
you arrive
don't worry I'll catch you
don't worry I'll catch you
don't ever worry
still breaking old habits,
habits
you pulled the wool over me
and I can see everything
everything
remembering
Jinx removing
don't worry I'll catch you
don't wory I'll catch you
don't ever worry
no need for reminding
you're still all that matters to me.

top 10 album list (subject to change)
10. Minor Threat - Complete Discography
I know, I know. This is WAY too low on the list. I'm sorry! Its a great great album but I just think there's 9 better ones. Ian Mackaye is my personal hero, and his lyrics on this album are passionate, angry, and awesome. Best songs are "In My Eyes" and "I Dont Wanna Hear It." I love all of it, and as a straight edge kid, this has to be SOMEWHERE In my top 10 even if hardcore isnt my true passion.
9. For Science - Tomorrows Just Another Day
This album is a catchy, fun, slightly depressing pop-punk album from a great band from New Jersey. I like to listen to it when I'm depressed because it kind of soothes it in a way. I'm really sad these guys broke up cause I would pay big money to see them. This album is super fantastic and I recommend it to everyone because of its catchiness. Recommended tracks - Even, Heavy Blues, and East of E.
8. The Mountain Goats - Sunset Tree
SURPRISE!! Something that isnt punk. This is a super awesome folk album that always makes me happy listening to it. His lyrics are simply amazing. (and are on every mountain goats release I've heard) This album has passion without being fast or aggressive and for me its sometimes hard to notice that kind of passion. I do with this album though and its really great. I recommend this album to absolutely anyone. Its super listener friendly. Recommended tracks are You Or Your Memory, This Year, and Lions Teeth.
7. Descendents - Milo Goes To College
Ok here is a pop-punk classic. SUCH a great album that you can easily listen to beginning to end without stopping once. Its so catchy, so fun, and so entertaining. The lyrics are usually pretty hilarious and/or relatable and its a great album for when you just want something easy to listen to. One of the forerunners of pop-punk. Thank you Descendents!
Recommended tracks are Marriage, Myage, and Suburban Home.
6. Teenage Bottlerocket - Total
Catchy love songs are pretty much the greatest thing to hit music since the guitar... and TBR does it great, especially in this album. I really wish I could write lyrics as catchy as Ray and I hope that they come to SLC very, really, extremely soon, and also to an all ages venue. I will explode with excitement. Anyway, this album is super catchy, and super listener friendly. Their Ramones influences show heavily. Recommended tracks are, Fall For Me, Radio, and Bloodbath At Burger King.
Top 5 OMG!!!
5. Defiance, Ohio - The Great Depression
So as I said in my previous article, Defiance, Ohio got me into the world of awesome punk rock. I listened to them nonstop for ages but have since grown out of the folk-punk world and more into other genres. Either way, Defiance, Ohio albums all rock and are all fun to listen to. This ones my favorite. Its really uplifting and the female vocals rule. It seems that pretty much everyone who listens to these guys ends up loving them sooner or later. Recommended tracks are Calling Old Friends, Letter Home, and Oh Susquehanna.
4. The Steinways - Gorilla Marketing
This album is super fun and super listener friendly and super easy to listen to. (Did I mention it was super?) The Steinways write probably the most relatable lyrics for a late teen/early 20 year old possible. Every song is catchy as hell and really fun to listen to. My only problem is that I wish Ace would have sung more. Grath usually sings and he is really great too so its not that big of a deal. Seriously, if you can find this album, get it. You wont be disappointed. Recommended tracks, Half-Baked Heartache, Good Grief, Manhattan Boots
3. Jawbreaker - Dear You
Ok. Heres the one. The one that every pop-punk fan with any feelings of depression listens to. Blake Schwarzenbach (the lead singer) writes the most cynical, depressing, amazing lyrics ever. Seriously, ever. This is their only major label release and its usually considered their best. When I'm depressed, feeling crappy about myself, or just want to listen to some awesome music, I go to Dear You. Oh and I need to mention that Blake is my man-crush. Recommended tracks, Chemistry, I love you so much its killing us both, and Accident Prone
2. Lemuria - Get Better
Let me preface this by saying I have a Lemuria tattoo on my leg and I am mighty proud of it. This album is so wonderfully amazing that I cant even explain it. Sheenas voice is beautiful on it and the lyrics make it even better. Alex's monotone deeper voice compliments Sheena's voice perfectly. There are some very cute songs on this and all other Lemuria releases. (and who doesnt love cute songs????) I really like Alex's drumming too. Its not cookie-cutter at all. Its really cool. One funny thing about Lemuria is that just about everyone I show them too, loves them. Theyre just so damn good. I expect Lemuria to get much bigger then they are now and they'll deserve it all. Recommended tracks, Pants, Dog, and Fingers
1. The Ergs! - Dorkrockcorkrod
Let me preface this by saying I have an Ergs! tattoo on my leg and I am might proud of it. Anyway, this is the album of all albums. Pop-punk at its finest. Every member is extremely talented at their respective instruments and Mike Yannich's lyrics are SO so great. Those sort of things arent really common in the world of punk. I've been listening to this album basically for 2 years straight. Its so great in every single way. Its basically a concept album where the whole album (but two songs) is about girls, and romantic situations. Its highly relatable and awesomely amazing. I suggest everyone buy it when they can because they wont be disappointed. Recommended tracks, A Very Pretty Song For A Very Special Young Lady Pt. 2, Pray For Rain, Rod Argent.
Anyway, thats my top ten albums for the moment. Thanks for reading!

Revolutionary band (at least for me)
So I've been into punk rock for about 5 years now. The bands that originally got me into it were bands like Pennywise, NOFX, The Unseen, and the band with the most effect had to have been Anti-Flag. (Embarassing I know) So I listened to those bands and bands like them for a little over a year. It was pretty fun, and I am thankful to every one of those bands for getting me into punk but there came a time when I realized that the majority of them were really lame. (luckily I was listening to a lot of Minor Threat and Black Flag at the time too) and I just kinda drifted away from punk rock for awhile. I didnt know where to find new bands in the genre and I felt like I was at kind of a roadblock in the punk world. So instead I moved on over to the wonderful (bleh!) world of indie rock. (yes I consider it a genre) I stooped as low as Sufjan Stevens and even admitted to liking him for awhile. After I realized how stupid and lame that was, I was back at that roadblock. I needed something new.
I remember it perfectly. It was december of '06 and I had given up on music. I felt like the mainstream was failing and it was too much work to find music elsewhere, until I heard about this band called Defiance, Ohio. I cant even remember how I found them but it was somewhere on the web. Anyway I read that they were "folk punk" and that they not only used conventional instruments like guitars and drums, but also a violin, a cello, and an upright bass. I thought that was wicked cool for a punk band. I then read that they have all of their releases for download on their website. I ALSO thought that was wicked cool and I instantly fell in love from those things alone. I went to their site and downloaded every release they had (I have since bought all the full lengths and some splits on cd and two full length lps of theirs) and listened and absolutley loved it. It was great. A very long Defiance, Ohio obsession followed and I was able to see them here in SLC in March of '07.
What was really great about discovering D, OH was that they opened me up to a whole new world of underground punk rock. I started with the whole plan-it-x label and just kept discovering more and more bands. I now love many sub-genres of punk and really owe it all to Defiance, Ohio. Theyre a super great band who sells their albums for super cheap (like literally six bucks)so I suggest you buy them asap. Here is a link to buy their albums....
http://www.noidearecords.com/ go to releases at the top then click on Defiance, Ohio then you'll see all of their albums. You cant go wrong with any of them.
If you have bittorrent and would like to download their albums then their official website works great. http://www.defianceohio.terrorware.com/audio.php
This band is really really great. I cant say that enough. Go and buy and/or download their stuff NOW!!!! :D Thanks!

Your Pompadour is stupid!
Ok.....its rant time. There is a sub-genre of punk that mixes elements of rockabilly with elements of the punk rock and it is called psychobilly. It is one of the most god-awful genres to ever exist. It includes bands such as Tiger Army, Horrorpops, Nekromantix, The Meteors, etc. etc. As far as I know (not that I care to) it started in the early 80's or late 70's with the band The Cramps. I dont hate them, and I'm pretty sure they dont claim the psychobilly title (maybe they do, who knows) but nevertheless they started one of the biggest mistakes in punk rock history. (They did get Ian Mackaye into punk, so Kudos!)
Anyway, I've been to one psychobilly show in my lifetime. It was about 2 or 3 years ago. It was the local band Spooky Deville, The Chop Tops, Koffin Kats, and the headliner...Nekromantix! I'll have to say it was the worst show I've ever been to. (And yes, I've seen The Casualties live) Every single band I think had an upright bass which was just ridiculous. Every band member had the god awful mutated mohawk (and I thought that haircut couldnt get any worse) called the pompadour. OH! And the music! The upright bass just sounds bad. Like you can hear the strings being slapped and that isnt a good thing. Most of the bands have horrible vocals. Kind of like they were in their high school choir and they learned a thing or two there so they want to transfer their awesome singing ability to a crappy psychobilly band. It was probably as bad or worse then any street punk show. The crowd were a bunch of tards. Usually I'm not a pretentious person but being in that crowd of people was a self-esteem booster.
Its weird how much people will do to fit into a certain scene, and it was especially apparent at the psychobilly show. People doing everything they can to look the part, act the part, just to be a psycho. Why anyone would want to associate themselves with that scene, I will never know, but apparently a lot of people do. I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and say that I dont think I'll be heading to a psychobilly show in the near future, or even listening to a psychobilly band by choice ever again in my life. I will leave you with this wonderful comic, courtesy of Mitch Clem.
Love, Zach!Orchid? Omg they are soooooo pretty.
Ok.....for our last entry of the night we're gonna talk about the controversial topic of screamo, skramz, chaotic emo, emo violence, etc. (theyre all the same thing) No we arent talking about your little 14 year old sisters favorite bands.....(Alesana, TDWP, Underoath, etc.) we're talking about the real deal. There are many different types of emo but we're only gonna tackle the screaming type.
That type of emo started with bands like Saetia, Orchid, and Pg.99 back around '97 and '98. Basically what it is, is a type of deep, emotional, chaotic type of hardcore punk. The lyrics are very thoughtful, poetic, and deep and the vocals are screamed out at the top of their lungs. There is no "clean singing" in real screamo. There is no sweep haircuts, or eyeliner, or major labels or major amounts of money. Most of the recordings were released on vinyl and most of the bands were broken up years ago. Interestingly enough, screamo is the only branch of real emo that is still existing today. Current bands include Ampere, Comadre, Touche Amore, Pianos Become The Teeth, The Saddest Landscape, etc.
One major aspect of real screamo that exists with pretty much every band is a strong belief in the diy punk ethic. They did everything themselves or with small amounts of help from small diy labels. As a result real emo/screamo bands were very much underground and under the radar. None of these bands were making a lot of money. Saetia, (who is now a legendary band in a lot of peoples eyes) played their final show to about 40 people. Pretty crazy, especially thinking that around that time, Limp Bizkit was probably selling out stadiums singing about "the nookie." Kind of a horrible world we live in, huh?
The emotion put into this music is simply amazing. Of course, all music is emotional, but real screamo has a phenomenal sense of emotion that you dont get from other types of music. If you dont believe me one play through saetias album would change your mind, even if you dont like the music. Everyone can agree that the emotion put into it is astounding.
There is a strong european screamo scene that we will talk about at a later date.
I would like to mention one album, and that album is "Believes In Patterns" by I Would Set Myself On Fire For You. Its as emotive as they come. I would call it experimental screamo. It has a violin and you can feel the music as you listen to it. Simply amazing. (Even though the name of the band kinda sucks)
Well thats what we have to say about the world of Skramz. (That term is hilarious btw) Here are some albums to download for your listening pleasure. Some essentials I guess.

Fest 8 was GR8 review! - Zachs version!
Alright so..... The Fest is a punk rock fest that happens every October in Gainesville, Florida. It has over 200 bands and they are pretty much all awesome. Austin and I were lucky enough to be able to go last October and we had the time of our lives, with a few minor complaints. I will say what I thought and then let Austin tell you what he thought. First I will say that the top three performances of the fest were as follows....
1. Comadre
2. Lemuria
3. Psyched To Die
HM. Ampere
I had seen Comadre twice before but, holy crap, they were SO ridiculously intense. I had so much fun during their set. My face was bleeding afterwards and it was so awesome. Crazy mosh pits. I think I'll say after seeing them three times that Comadre is the best active live band. Whenever "Burn the Scene" is played, its INSANE. So awesome.
Lemuria is my favorite active band. I was able to meet Alex Kerns and Sheena Ozzella (the drummer, and guitarist respectively. Both are on vocals) They were super nice and cool. When they played I was able to sing along to every song and the mosh pits were awesome. I was a little pissed when a stupid moron came into the mosh pit with a cup of beer and spilled it all over my favorite Lemuria shirt. I wanted to perform an SXE beatdown right then and there. (just kidding) It REALLY pissed me off. I'll touch more on this later though.... Anyway, Lemuria played pretty much all of their best songs and it was a lot of fun.
Psyched To Die has one of my favorite musicians Mike Yannich (from The Ergs!) on guitar and vocals. Its pretty much a straight forward pretty fast hardcore band. They are SO good though. I saw them in a tiny venue called 1982 and it was loads of fun. Everyone was getting into it and I had a great time. I went up to Mike after, and showed him my ergs! tattoo and he gave me a gigantic bear hug. It pretty much made my life.
Ampere was the honorable mention (cause a top 4 would be weird) They were right after Comadre so I was tired but they were even more intense then Comadre, which was a little TOO intense for me but still ridiculously awesome. It was probably the roughest mosh pit I had been in. They were super nice people too.
Ok onto the disappointments.....
1. Japanther
2. The Measure (SA)
3. Banner Pilot
Ok I will start by saying that I absolutely love all three of these bands. Theyre all awesome BUT their fest performances werent too great.
Japanther played in the biggest venue which I think was a major mistake. Their music came off as boring, generic, and kind of lame, which it isnt at all on their recordings. I've been wanting to see Japanther for years and when I finally did they really came off flat. It really bummed me out. I hope they come back to SLC so I can see them in a smaller venue where their music will probably be much better.
2. The Measure (SA) is a great pop-punk band with (you guessed it!) Mike Yannich on the drums but they all came on stage really drunk, and they just werent that great. I really love them and would love to see them again but it just wasnt what I was expecting.
3. Banner Pilot is a pretty good orgish band but I've never been way into them so I wasnt TOO pumped to see them. Still though, I was pretty stoked and they were just kinda boring. Maybe if I knew their music better or was more into them they would have been better but for the most part it wasnt that exciting.
Gripes and Complaints -
I had heard that there is a lot of drinking at the fest and I dont drink but I didnt think too much into it. When I got to the shows and especially the "after-shows" the drinking was insane and really obnoxious. I mean why would you fly from all over the country, or world to go get drunk? Shouldnt you be there for the music? To see your favorite bands? I mean, you can get drunk at home on your couch or at a frat party with a bunch of bros. Come on. And whats with the dumbasses bringing cups of beer into mosh pits? My Lemuria shirt was drenched from beer after the Lemuria show. It was disgusting. At the after shows people were drunk out of their mind making COMPLETE dicks out of themselves and when a hardcore band came on and starting doing their breakdowns I actually welcomed all the hardcore dancers who I usually hate with a passion. They scared away the stupid drunks. Also some fester came up and offered us weed and then scoffed at us when we respectfully declined. Screw that stuff. Its stupid.
Also, the lines were pretty long and getting into venues was a real pain. That got very frustrating at times but I was still able to see a ton of good bands, and pretty much everyone that i wanted to see except for Defiance, Ohio. (but I've seen them before so its ok)
Overall fest 8 was amazing! I recommend it to everyone who can go. Maybe I'll be back next year, who knows?

No Wave

what do you get when you throw jazz, funk, experimental and punk rock in a blender? Well you get the little known genre called No wave. No wave was a brief short lived avante garde off shoot of punk music in the late 70s from 1978 to 1982. The genre was based entirely in the lower east side of new york.
The essential release in this genre is actually a comp called No New York which was produced of Brian Eno of the popular group Roxy Music. The album which only features four artist D.n.a, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks as well as the Contortions and Mars the album is perhaps the defintive album to document this scene.
The album was thought up while Eno was in town producing the Talking Heads album More Songs About Building Food. He attended a four day festival with performances by those following bands. Eno was impressed with the band an thought that the scene should be documented. He proposed the idea of the comp with himself as producer.
The thing I find cool about the release is that originally the lyrics were printed on the inside of the record sleeve which made it so you had to tear apart the sleeve to read them. The album was reissued in 2005 by lilith records on digi pack cd and vinyl. Reviews of the reissue were positive. One writer said, "Some listeners would be fascinated by the music on No New York while others might find it unbearable."
The album also gets uber hipster points due to the fact blender magazine listed it as number 65 on the greatest indie rock albums EVER
The genre no wave is very fascinating... To find out more I recommend the book Byron Coley's No Wave: Post-Punk. Underground. New York. 1976-1980 Scott Carary documentary Kill Your Idols

Pop-punk!!!
Alright, for our first official entry I'm gonna write about the small but amazingly awesome genre of Pop-punk. I'm gonna answer two questions to start it off.....
1. NO it isnt dead.
2. NO Blink-182 doesnt qualify.
The reason I like real pop-punk is because of the relatability of the lyrics, the catchy melodies, and really just because it is usually some of the most fun and uplifting music out there. I suffer from bipolar disorder and I cant tell you the countless times pop-punk has brought me out of or soothed a depression. Its really cool.
In my (humble) opinion just about every modern pop-punk band is influenced heavily by either The Ramones, The Descendents, or both. I think I've even heard the genre "Ramones-core" being used before. (Thats pretty ridiculous to be honest) Thanks to labels like Red Scare, No Idea (and the labels that surround it), Dirtnap, Lookout! (of course), Recess, and even Fat Wreck and Plan-it-x we have some awesome pop-punk bands. (sorry if I forgot some important ones!)Now the first couple REAL pop-punk bands that anyone will mention and listen to are Screeching Weasel and The Queers. They are both really great bands from the 90's (and even into the 2000's) but I think there is so much better out there. The first band I would start with is a pretty well respected band. They were called The Ergs! (RIP 2008) and were lead by their drummer and lead singer Mike Yannich. The Ergs! were great cause not only did they write extremely relatable lyrics, they were one of the most talented punk bands I have ever heard. Every member is amazing at his instrument. They've helped me a lot and I still say The Ergs! show in the summer of 2008 was my favorite of all time.
So if you wanna get started in the genre of real pop-punk I think The Ergs! album "DorkRockCordRod" is a GREAT place to start. Other good albums would be anything by Teenage Bottlerocket. Their Ramones influences show very very heavily. They recently signed to Fat Wreck Chords and their album on that label was great. My favorite of theirs though has to be "Total" released by Red Scare. (I believe?) Also The Steinways - "Gorilla Marketing" is a great album which is awesome for any guy with low confidence and trouble with girls. (Thats probably with all pop-punk though haha) And dont forget Lemuria. Awesome female and male vocals. Catchy pop-punk on Asian Man records. Theyre super awesome and a little more mellow. I recommend "Get Better" from them. Anyway, thanks for reading our first entry! HXC is up next!

Our blog!!
Alright, this is Zach and Austins new music blog. Both of us are extremely obsessed with the world of punk rock, the scene surrounding it, and pretty much anything related to it. We both like a variety of genres, sub-genres, etc. but are very particular about what we like. For example, be careful how you use the word "emo" around us. Calling The All-American Rejects "Pop-punk" is like calling Uwe Boll talented. (Basically dont do it) Mixing the words "Christian" and "Hardcore" is also a no-no. We're gonna get into all of this and more in this blog. Expect mp3 uploads and maybe even full albums. Hopefully you enjoy what we have to say and you learn something! Thanks!
