So I've been into punk rock for about 5 years now. The bands that originally got me into it were bands like Pennywise, NOFX, The Unseen, and the band with the most effect had to have been Anti-Flag. (Embarassing I know) So I listened to those bands and bands like them for a little over a year. It was pretty fun, and I am thankful to every one of those bands for getting me into punk but there came a time when I realized that the majority of them were really lame. (luckily I was listening to a lot of Minor Threat and Black Flag at the time too) and I just kinda drifted away from punk rock for awhile. I didnt know where to find new bands in the genre and I felt like I was at kind of a roadblock in the punk world. So instead I moved on over to the wonderful (bleh!) world of indie rock. (yes I consider it a genre) I stooped as low as Sufjan Stevens and even admitted to liking him for awhile. After I realized how stupid and lame that was, I was back at that roadblock. I needed something new.
I remember it perfectly. It was december of '06 and I had given up on music. I felt like the mainstream was failing and it was too much work to find music elsewhere, until I heard about this band called Defiance, Ohio. I cant even remember how I found them but it was somewhere on the web. Anyway I read that they were "folk punk" and that they not only used conventional instruments like guitars and drums, but also a violin, a cello, and an upright bass. I thought that was wicked cool for a punk band. I then read that they have all of their releases for download on their website. I ALSO thought that was wicked cool and I instantly fell in love from those things alone. I went to their site and downloaded every release they had (I have since bought all the full lengths and some splits on cd and two full length lps of theirs) and listened and absolutley loved it. It was great. A very long Defiance, Ohio obsession followed and I was able to see them here in SLC in March of '07.
What was really great about discovering D, OH was that they opened me up to a whole new world of underground punk rock. I started with the whole plan-it-x label and just kept discovering more and more bands. I now love many sub-genres of punk and really owe it all to Defiance, Ohio. Theyre a super great band who sells their albums for super cheap (like literally six bucks)so I suggest you buy them asap. Here is a link to buy their albums....
